This project was undertaken to assess the antiquity
of the ancient Mansarovar pilgrimage route passing through district Pithoragarh.
Numerous archaeological sites comprising stone temples, broken architectural
pieces and stone sculptures came to light during the course of explorations.
A stone image of Visnu dated to Gupta period, installed in a small stone
temple at Nakulesvara Mahadeva located near district headquarters of Pithoragarh,
is the earliest known archaeological remain of this area, which indicates
that perhaps it marks the lower limit of this route. On stylistic considerations
other remains have been placed between 8th-10th century AD. On this basis
it may be surmised that this route was in greater use during this period.
