Excavation At Jajmau , District Kanpur
Project Director
R.C. Singh and Hemraj, U.P. State Archaeological Organisation
Objective
To understand the culture sequence of the site in order to determine the antiquity of the ancient settlement.
Outcome
The investigations, including excavation and exploration in the nearby area, revealed that this site and adjoining areas were inhabited at least during the 6th century BC. As far as quality of Northern Black Polished ware is concerned the excavations at this site have provided very fine specimens. A sealing bearing an inscription deciphered as vasalas (vrisalasa) dated to about 3rd-2nd century BC on stylistic grounds, is interesting because this title has been mentioned in early literature also.
