Ancient Pilgrimage Route 'Bhilangana Kedar'
Project Director
R. Tewari, Regional Archaeological Unit (Garhwal-Kumaon)
This was a small project, carried out under the Regional Archaeological Unit, (Srinagar) in 1980-81, with the limited objective of determining the antiquity of pilgrimages on this route. The area comes under the districts of Tehri and Chamoli. The earliest finding of pilgrimage on this route was revealed from a famous tirtha - Triyugi Narayana - located near the famous Kedarnatha in the form of a stone image of Visnu bearing an inscription of Gupta Period. This evidence shows that the Vaisnava sect was prevelant here since the 5th century AD indicating that the Bhilangana - Kedar route had been used since 1500 years from the present.
